Formula 1 Spielberg: Camping Guide for Dutch Fans

Orange flags, Verstappen jerseys and hundreds of Dutch fans – at Schitterhof you're in excellent company when you travel to Spielberg for Formula 1. This guide shows you how to plan your race weekend relaxed and hassle-free.

If you're Dutch and heading to the Austrian Grand Prix, you know the scene: orange everywhere, euphoric Verstappen supporters and an atmosphere somewhere between Zandvoort and Zeltweg. Honestly, that's exactly what makes Spielberg feel like a second home race for many of you. At Schitterhof – just 900 metres from the Red Bull Ring – hundreds of Dutch guests camp every year. Many have been coming back for years now, because they know: here everything runs smoothly, quietly and well-organized.

Which pitch category suits your camper or caravan?

Pitches are staggered by vehicle length so everyone has enough space. BASIC (approx. 30 m², gently sloping grass, optional electricity) works for campervans up to 6 metres, car with tent or two motorcycles. PREMIUM (approx. 48 m², level, electricity included) accommodates motorhomes up to 7.5 metres – the most popular choice for medium-sized Dutch alcove or semi-integrated models. PREMIUM XL (approx. 60 m², 6×10 metres) fits combinations of car plus caravan or extra-long motorhomes up to 9 metres. PREMIUM XXL (approx. 78 m², 6×13 metres) is designed for proper luxury liners up to 12 metres – if you're arriving in a large A-class or liner, that's your category.

All pitches have 230 V / 8 A via standard Schuko socket (Type F, CEE 7/3) – exactly the same system as in Germany and Austria. Meaning: your Dutch plugs (Type F) fit straight in, no adapter needed. Just bring a weatherproof outdoor cable reel with at least 25, ideally 40 metres length so you can reach from the connection point to your vehicle – and always unwind the cable completely, otherwise it'll overheat.

How does booking and arrival work for Dutch guests?

You book online at schitterhof.at: select event, choose category, set people and nights, pay. Shortly after payment you'll receive a confirmation email with QR code – just show it on your phone at check-in. Children under 15 are exempt from tourist tax and don't pay any pitch surcharge; your dog is also free. For Formula 1 there's a minimum three-night stay; the bookable arrival and departure days are shown directly in the calendar (event week Tuesday to Monday). Arrival is possible from your booked day onwards, check-in usually runs 08:00–22:00, until 23:00 on the main arrival day.

The drive from the Netherlands takes roughly 10–12 hours depending on your starting point – many prefer the A8 via Munich and Salzburg or the A7/A81 via Stuttgart. GPS coordinates 47.2140879, 14.7775305 take you directly to the entrance (address: Spielbergerstraße 12, 8724 Spielberg). During events the access road is marked with white signs showing "black tent on white background" so you'll get through without problems.

Why do so many Dutch people come here specifically?

Let's be honest: Schitterhof has been an official Red Bull Ring partner since 1999 (colour code WHITE), and it shows. Many Dutch regulars appreciate that nobody's allowed to blast party music at three in the morning here – quiet time from 23:00 is consistently enforced. The professional security team ensures you can actually sleep after a long race day. For families, couples and anyone who wants to be fresh in the morning, that's gold.

On top of that: the sanitary facilities are modern, clean (cleaned several times daily) and have hot water around the clock. Fresh water filling, grey water disposal and chemical toilet emptying are all free. On event days there are two catering areas – MATTEO (breakfast from 07:00, evening pizza & pasta) and MAMAS TACOS – open from morning till evening. And if you need to shop in between: Fridays and Saturdays there's a free supermarket shuttle running every 30 minutes.

What do I need to know before departure?

You don't have to leave before the race – quite the opposite. Monday departure is flexible and relaxed, ideally by around 13:00. Experience shows most Schitterhof guests roll out about an hour after the race ends, well before the official campsites are cleared. The nearby S36 slip road (approx. 800 metres, direction Spielberg/Zeltweg Ost) also helps ease traffic. Leave full rubbish bags at your pitch (you'll get coloured bags at check-in), the team collects them. Fresh water and disposal are available all day Monday. Formal check-out is only required for chalet guests; on the pitches a tidy site is enough.
