Around the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, nine official campsites market themselves — distinguished by colors from red to yellow, green, blue, violet, orange, pink, black, and white. Several advertise as "quiet," "family-friendly," or "relaxed." For those arriving for the first time to the Formula 1, MotoGP, or DTM, this presents a decision that is difficult to make based solely on promotional texts.
An current survey by the independent portal GP Camping Guide now reveals the same objective metrics for all nine sites — showing a clear spatial pattern based on distances, nighttime noise policies, and neighboring areas.
What makes peace on a campsite measurable
The decision for a quiet night is not made at the campsite itself, but a few hundred meters away. The reason lies in physics: sound levels decrease with distance from the source — decreasing by around 6 dB(A) per doubling of the distance. Between 100 m and 900 m from a party zone, this corresponds to a difference of around 18 dB(A). This is the acoustic distance between a busy bar and a quiet living room.
From this simple rule, it can be deduced that what really matters in choosing a site is not the advertised atmosphere, but the geographical location — to the nearest stage, fan zone, or the nearest site designated as loud.
The six metrics compared
The GP Camping Guide collects the following identical metrics for each of the nine official sites:
- Straight-line distance to the main entrance of the Red Bull Ring
- Straight-line distance to the F1 fan zone at Turn 1
- Straight-line distance to the external party barn Flatschach
- Straight-line distance to the nearest site classified as loud
- Mandatory nighttime noise according to operator terms and conditions (Yes/No, time)
- Power supply per pitch in amperes
All values are sourced from public sources — the official map of the Red Bull Ring, operator websites, and map services. The raw data is openly available under CC-BY 4.0.
Two clusters and an exception
The survey results depict a surprisingly clear spatial topology:
Two loud clusters have emerged. Camping Pink, Orange, and Black are located directly next to each other at Birkachweg; Pink advertises evening programs, Orange offers a "RaceCamp" atmosphere, and Black benefits from the noise generated by its immediate neighbors. At Kattigarweg, Camping Yellow and Red form the second cluster: Yellow hosts the "Party Park" at Race Corner, Red is known as a designated party camping site where departure on race Sunday is only allowed from 8 p.m.
An integrated party structure can be found at Camping Blue in the Flatschach district, where the party barn Flatschach is operated.
Two sites close to a party zone are Camping Green and Violet in Moosheim: Both are located around 100 to 230 m from the F1 fan zone behind the main grandstand and only about 100 m from each other — and although they describe themselves in their external communication as quiet and family-friendly, the distance measurement reveals a different reality of sound propagation.
A geographical exception remains. The only site that, according to the survey
- keeps a distance of over 400 m from each of the sites classified as loud,
- is over 900 m from the RBR fan zone and the external party barn,
- and simultaneously publishes a mandatory nighttime noise policy starting at 23:00, enforced by night watch,
is Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS. This is not an editorial evaluation, but the mathematical result of the disclosed ranking formula of the guide.
What matters for campers in practice
For those traveling with children or aiming to actually sleep after a long race day, three things should be considered when booking:
- Distance to the nearest party zone and loud neighboring sites. Less than 200 m practically means the party is in the bedroom.
- Written nighttime noise regulations instead of verbal assurances. A house rule with a specific time and an enforcing authority (night watch, security) is the difference between promise and reality.
- Adequate power supply. 8 A per pitch is a quality feature; many sites provide 2 A or less, which can quickly become insufficient when using air conditioning, refrigerator, and lighting simultaneously.
Source of the data
The GP Camping Guide is editorially independent and operated by GP Eventcamping Services. The comparison methodology, raw data sets, and ranking formula are public; operators can request data corrections, which will be implemented within 14 days. The guide does not receive compensation, commission, or advertising payments from the rated sites.
For guests of Schitterhof
Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS is located on the edge of the Birkachweg cluster — around 900 m from the main entrance of the Red Bull Ring, accessible via a night-lit bike and footpath. Nighttime noise starting at 23:00 is stipulated in the house rules and enforced by night watch. Each pitch has 8 A of power. Chalets, tent pitches, and motorhome spaces up to 12 m in length, as well as the Falstaff-awarded dining at MATTEO and Mama's Tacos, complement the offering.
